Playmobil showed two parachutists at Toy Fair this year. What impressed me was the quality and size of the parachute. This isn’t dime-store cellophane, this is a material similar to a real-life parachute (or a tent). The diameter when fully open is just a bit wider than 12″. I like the way the figure can hold the ropes, it makes the design feel a bit more integrated. You can throw it up in the air, or do like we did and send him from the top of a tall building. I have to admit, it’s a simple gimmick, but even at my age, it’s still fun to watch over and over. We got Greg, with the yellow and black styling, but Rick is also available in red, white, and blue. I’d love to see playmobil offer just the chute and pack through the Add-Ons catalog, maybe in the clip-on style of their frame backpack accessory.
We saw four pull-back racers at Toy Fair this year. All of them look great, but this hot rod was my favorite. I wish one of the doors (or part of the hood) opened up, but the play value is in racing the car. Pull back the rear wheels until they click and then set it in the starting gate. This bracket will hold it in place until you let it go, and then off it goes. I love how the cars themselves look amazing, but they have this additional play feature, and it fits in seamlessly with the toy.
I initially thought $13 and $20 (respectively) was a little high of a price point, but once you get them in your hands and feel the quality of the toy you’re getting, you can see where the money went. I appreciate these toys’ high quality build, and they’ll last and last.
These are available at Toys R Us and your neighborhood mom & pop toy stores.
