I got a preview copy of Transformers on DVD, so I invited a buddy over to watch it in my makeshift home theater. I fed the baby (almost 2 months old) around 7:00 and then put him in his swing in the living room. I set up the baby monitor next to him, and then went down stairs for some beers and bots.

We made it just about 1hr 45 minutes when he started fussing. He wasn’t hungry, but he wanted company. So I dashed upstairs, rocked him a few minutes in my arms, then snuck back down stairs as soon as his eyes closed (I swear, this whole “Are the eyes open” thing must have been what influenced the Oracles in Neverending Story
So every 10 minutes or so he’d start his “eh…eh…eh…” and I’d pop up to soothe him, and then retreat to the basement.

Anyway, my wife comes home from class just as he starts wailing (it is almost time for him to eat again) and I got in trouble for being downstairs watching a movie full blast drinkin’ a beer while the kid is screaming his head off, alone…

My buddy was able to vouch that I did indeed check on him every single time he fussed, so this was just shoddy timing.

This ever happen to you? Do I just need to pick shorter movies? He slept through the floor shaking explosions…

It’s Murphy’s Law. Your wife will come home when your behavior *appears* to be at its worst. It’s out of your hands.

  2. Bobby Says:

You get to watch your movies??

Seriously, you’re in a no win situation there. If you had decided not to watch your movie and spend the whole evening with the boy, he would have been perfectly content until the moment before your wife arrived.

You do NOT leave my baby alone and crying while you drink beers and watch movies with your buddies. And I’m not sorry.
