Precious Snowflake

The trend of over-rewarding our collective children: being critical of their criticism, and homogenizing all acomplishments, big and small, essentially protecting the “losers” so we don’t hurt their self esteem, has finally generated a back-lash!

For me it started back when my teacher wife was told that she wasn’t to use red marking pens when grading her students’ work… for it might hurt their self esteem, so she is to use Purple or other colors. Give me a got-damn break… but little did I know that was merely the tip of the ice burg… here are two examples directly from the Times article, I’m about to point you towards….

A recent production of Snow White at a primary school in Japan featured 25 Snow Whites, no dwarfs and no wicked witch, as parents objected to one child being picked out for the title role. In Sweden a boy was prevented from handing out invitations to his birthday party at school because he was “discriminating” against the two classmates he did not invite.

This weekend we are taking my 10 month old son camping for the first time. He loves his toys, but most of them require batteries, so I’m looking for toys that he will like that are perfect for the outdoors, and may get lost or broken in the process.

Based on a recommendation from one of the parents on the Playground at Offsprung.com I picked up some of those simple Fisher Price “Baby’s First Blocks”.

BUT! I’m a graphic designer, and thought I could punch it up a bit, so I designed stickers to go on the flat surface inside each shape. I did each of our heads, enough letters to spell his name, and some other fun designs. They’re recessed enough that they shouldn’t get too slobbery.

If you’d like to do your own, you can download this real cheap and easy PDF. If you have Adobe Illustrator, you can pop it open and add your own designs. Or simply print it out on sticky paper, decorate, cut, and apply. Please feel free to take pics and send em in. Or if you’ve modded other toys for your tot, let me know about that too.

If you have been following the BPA controversy like I have, you know it’s been “uh oh they’re dangerous!” and “nuh uh, they’re safe” for awhile now. To bring you up to speed, some say that any clear plastic water bottle that is shatter proof (like those Nalgene bottles that hikers use) can leech harmful chemical BPA over time.
They told us don’t wash them in hot water, don’t microwave them, don’t use them. The BPAs can lead to cancer, or early onset puberty (when I was a kid, that would have been awesome, but now I know that it would not have been awesome, and now that I have a kid, I don’t want any chemicals messing with his junk)

Well they’re also used in all kinds of popular baby bottles, so people were starting to freak out. First a study comes out saying they’re bad, then a study says they’re ok, then it turns out that THAT study was funded by a plastic company, then Canada’s FDA equiv says they’re banning them…
So now, BabyCenter.com is reporting that the FDA (our own USA FDA) says that they’re fine… nothing to see here, go about your business. (Click to read the article)
I wonder what we’ll hear next week.

My free downloadable Children’s books have been a big hit, so here’s my latest, a coloring/activity book that teaches kids all about HD!
You can download this PDF (it’s less than 1 Mb) for free and print it out and hand it off to the kid, then they’ll be able to teach you about HD, Blu-Ray, upconversion and 1080 lines of resolution with Heidi, the HD Hippo.
Let me know what you think.
If you want, take a picture of their creations, and I’ll post them in our gallery and feature them here. For real.

If the unthinkable happened, would your family be prepared? Every family deserves a little peace of mind. Put your family at ease by considering Universal Life Insurance today.

Here we are, each with our morning paper.

(That’s the free crinkle book newspaper from the other day that you can download and assemble yourself.)

Leave me a comment about what you got or what you did on Father’s Day this year

I decided to make my own cloth crinkle book for my son, and now you can too. It looks like a newspaper, it’s got high contrast and full color images inside, and that crinkly plastic in between pages. But when the kid is holding it, it looks like they’re reading the paper. Just like Daddy
This project involves sewing and ironing, so you may take this opportunity to forward this to someone you know and say “This would make a great gift!”
Here is the Newspaper PDF you can download for free, print out backwards and iron-on to white cloth. There are some jokes in there too, so enjoy that.
Here is the Reversed Print PDF if that makes it easier.
Check out our other Free Children’s books available for download.

I had a hard time getting through this article because of the UK vocab, but this 18 month old baby weighs about as much as a 4 year old because she only eats french fries.

Dailymail.co.uk article

She just won’t eat vegetables… from the article
“‘She might have a banana sometimes, or yogurt, but she won’t touch vegetables – she picks them up and throws them.”

So at 18 months, they get to make decisions about diet? Wow.
Maybe she needs to watch the video of Mrs. Stinkhead preparing vegetable baby food
