This morning, the Consumerist features a parent’s tale of woe as they purchased the Banzai Water park, and found the actual set up to be much much smaller than what’s pictures. Click to see the comparison.

I was thinking about my Toy Run video the other week, the one where I take my son around to various toy stores, showing him everything. I made a joke in the post that I could potentially be cultivating ADD later in life.
Is ADD genetic? Is it learned?
As a hobbyist toy collector and reviewer, our house is full of toys. It can be overwhelming. I can be overwhelming. As I get excited over which toys my son likes the most, I find myself constantly providing entertainments, but I also find myself asking, am I doing too much? Will he get used to a constant “feed feed feed” and not be able to concentrate on the things that do not interest him? If he’s playing with one toy, and I go to “clean up” another one he’s not playing with, his attention instantly goes to the one I’m touching. I know that’s normal and healthy for an infant, but if his life is constantly a choice between 2, or 3, or 20 different distractions, that I am ultimately responsible for, am I doing him a disservice for later in life?
School will be boring. There will be 30 other kids. At least. This is the last time in his life that someone is paying attention to his every need, including boredom or lack there of.

I was never diagnosed with any type of learning disability as a child, but I worry that my behavior and habits can be passed along. I certainly don’t want to damage the little guy, or make his 13 years of school that much more difficult.

On top of all the concentration issues, I also worry about the materialistic aspects. At some point I’ll have to say “no, I’m not buying that” or even “I know you saved up enough money and you can afford ____, but you’re not allowed to buy it” (Then he’ll just buy it and blog it 20 years later, just like I did here.)

What did you do to make sure you didn’t overload the kid growing up? Are there milestones or measures you can use to make sure you’re not going overboard?

Who knew you could Rick Roll a baby like that?
(I didn’t do this video, I’m just linking to a find I found… which I don’t do often)

This weekend we are taking my 10 month old son camping for the first time. He loves his toys, but most of them require batteries, so I’m looking for toys that he will like that are perfect for the outdoors, and may get lost or broken in the process.

Based on a recommendation from one of the parents on the Playground at Offsprung.com I picked up some of those simple Fisher Price “Baby’s First Blocks”.

BUT! I’m a graphic designer, and thought I could punch it up a bit, so I designed stickers to go on the flat surface inside each shape. I did each of our heads, enough letters to spell his name, and some other fun designs. They’re recessed enough that they shouldn’t get too slobbery.

If you’d like to do your own, you can download this real cheap and easy PDF. If you have Adobe Illustrator, you can pop it open and add your own designs. Or simply print it out on sticky paper, decorate, cut, and apply. Please feel free to take pics and send em in. Or if you’ve modded other toys for your tot, let me know about that too.

My son is nine months old, and we just had his first major illness. Violent vomitting (not baby spit-up, this was the real deal) and explosive diarrhea. He had a slight fever so my wife took him to the doctor. They prescribed a liquid medicine to give him. Here is the time line of incompetance. Read the rest of this entry »

So I haven’t done AOL Instant Messenger in years, but I am on GMAIL quite frequently, now that they’ve merged functionality, I figured I’d dust off the ole screen name, and chat with YOU.

If you so choose, add MrStinkhead to your AIM buddy list. You can chat with me through there, or, if you use GMAIL and plug your AIM screen name in there, I should pop up in your GMAIL contact list with a green dot when I’m available.

So go ahead and add me, and drop me a line when you see me pop up. Please tell me that you’re from “NTR” right off the bat so that I don’t spend a half hour trying to guess which old girlfriend you might be. I can’t promise that conversation would be anything but revealing and pitiful.

We can chat about anything if you want… toys, kids, parenting, pregnancy, wives.. what have you.
Note
I am not interested in sexy time! So if you’re a lonely girl willing to chat: A) quit e-mailing me daily and B) I have no time for your shenanigans.

Cool, I look forward to speaking with you.

Yesterday, it was just me and the little dude driving around. His mom called and he likes when I put it on speaker phone so he can hear her talking. I was driving, he was in the back seat, so I handed over the phone. He’s nine months old, so he was munching on every possible angle while mommy talked to him. Anyway, as I’m driving, I look back and he’s pressing all kinds of buttons and I see a padlock icon… so I grab the phone before he can save some type of password, but it’s too late, the phone goes black and I can’t turn it back on.

Listen to my tale (as told on Magic 106.5) and see what I did….

Yes, that is a big burn mark on the chip

I’m starting a new feature, look to the right and you’ll see a button that says “I need advice”
If you click on that button, it will load up the posts that ask the readers for advice. Please pick and add a comment!

Right now I’m looking for advice regarding baby music that won’t drive me nuts. I have several albums that help put him to sleep, that I don’t mind listening to over the monitor, but are there playful, awake-time albums that are good for stimulating baby that won’t make me want to jam beef jerky into my ears?

Here’s the number one thing I can’t stand –I don’t like little kids singing. I need to listen to adults singing kids songs… I can’t take any more kids singing kids’ songs.

And feel free to check out the other subjects that need advice (this is the first one, so be patient). All are welcome.
Great Albums for Sleepy time (that I recommend)

Albums for play time

What do you recommend for either sleepy time or waking hours?
